About Us
History
The history of Keystone Mobility is unique in that the focus has always been one of service. Originally formed as the Central Pennsylvania Electric Mobility Repair Service (CPEMRS) in 1990 when Rev. David Sterling and his wife, Judy, moved to Pennsylvania, the maintenance of scooters began in 1985 when Judy, diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, started using a scooter. They could find no one to repair her scooter when it developed problems, so Rev. Sterling volunteered to become a qualified service representative for the Electric Mobility Company, based in Sewell, NJ. His experience as a mechanic and maintenance instructor for United Airlines, prior to his ordination and entrance into full-time church ministry, made it possible for him to develop this extra ministry. Due to ill health, Rev. Sterling retired from active church ministry as a pastor in May 1990.
In 1991 David and Judy decided to expand this service-oriented ministry and purchased a shuttle bus and converted it into a mobile shop. The goal of the ministry was to be able to lend a helping hand to those in need. It didn't matter who they were or what their financial needs were, they wanted to provide a service that was quick and of very high quality. This they have accomplished!
In 1995, CPEMRS became a Regional Service Center for the Electric Mobility. They serviced an area that extends from above Williamsport, PA, to the Maryland border; from west of State College to Allentown.
The ministry continued to grow, nearly doubling its active friends/customer base each year. It had been a great blessing to reach out to help hurting people, but in 1999, Rev. and Mrs. Sterling decided that the ministry had grown to large for them to handle alone. It became time to enlarge the scope of the ministry and hire a full time person to help with the repairs. CPEMRS incorporated as Keystone Mobility, Inc. Dave and Judy's son, Andrew, came into the business as the only salaried person in the corporation, holding the title of Chief Executive Officer. Dave continued to volunteer his time as President and is currently the technical advisor and consultant for the corporation. Keystone Mobility continued to be a Regional Service Center, but expanded its service to include all manufacturers of scooters, powered and manual wheelchairs, and vehicle lifts. It also had become a dealership for Electric Mobility, feeling it could comfortably stand behind the product due to its high-quality construction and durability. Once again, it was the utmost importance to compromise nothing for quality, and Keystone Mobility made a conscience decision not to offer other brands of scooters or powerchairs at that time.
When the new millennium rolled around, we realized that soon we would continue to exceed our capabilities. Andrew's wife, Cindy, committed herself to bringing her exceptional administrative skills into the business and has filled the role of office manager/technician/sales/everything she could get her hands on. Her talents have allowed the daily business operations flow better than some Fortune 500 companies we've seen. As manufacturers improved quality and diversity and new customer with new needs approached Keystone Mobility, we continued to expand, encompassing more and more manufacturers, and offering more diverse products. Our customer base grew into the thousands, and the need for additional technician support became apparent. Additional staff, service vehicles, and a larger facility became a reality.
The Present
Keystone Mobility continues to be an authorized agent in both sales and service for nearly every manufacturer in the industry. All of the people involved in the operations of Keystone Mobility are committed to continue the high standards set by Rev. & Mrs. Sterling. As the corporation plans to expand and enlarge its shop and showroom area, as it continues to train new service technicians and new sales people, and as it grows into a viable entity, its personnel will keep the needs of the friend/customer foremost and will continue to provide the exceptional service that has built the excellent reputation of this business.
The Future
In addition to our already high expectations of ourselves, we continue to look forward to adding more full-time technicians and sales staff, allowing Rev. Sterling to actually begin enjoying his "so-called" retirement. We also look to promote further options of advertising to enable our sales force to grow and improve the business bottom line for continued growth.
Praise the Lord!
